Why a Log Home
Energy and insulation:
In The log homes that we build, the average insulation rating is 25 % - 35%. This is much more efficient than a framed or “stick-built” home that is insulated in the conventional manner.
Solid wood is a naturally effective insulator, and real logs from Mr. Log Homes have insulation values far surpassing those of bricks, stones, cement block, or frame and siding walls. The end result is lower heating and cooling bills and the benefit of a constant inside temperature. No additional insulation is required.
Wood is composed of cellulose cells. These cells are joined together by natural glue called liguin, glue that not only has great strength, but is also elastic. Each cell contains millions of tiny air pockets and it is the air that acts as the insulator..
Wood as an insulator:
- Six inches of wood equals sixty inches of concrete, wood is fifteen times more efficient than concrete.
- Six times better insulation than brick, six inches of wood will provide as much insulation as twenty four inches of solid brick.
- Wood does not allow rapid or constant changing in indoor temperatures resulting in cooler summers and warmer winters.
Wood for Strength:
- Pound for pound wood is stronger than steel.
- Wood has great ability to withstand stress from violent storms.
Wood is durable:
- Wood is extremely long lasting. A house in Massachusetts has the original wood timbers in the frame that has withstood 336 New England Winters.
- Wood piles under a street in Venice were over 1000 years old when discovered.
- Wood timbers in a tomb in Turkey were over 27,000 years old when found.
- Wood exposed to the weather wears very little. This is true because woods cellular structure is hardly affected by cold or heat.
- Wood accepts stains and other finishes very well.
Ease and economy maintenance
Log Homes retain their natural beauty and protection for generations without heavy maintenance cost to you. The only care that the exterior walls may need is an occasional re-application of stains or preservatives. In some cases owners prefer to keep their exterior walls unfinished letting the original natural beauty mellow and deepen through the years. With a log home, accidental dents, scratches, and scuffs will not destroy the beauty of your walls as will happen with other wall surface.
